Audition Requirements

 

About Us

Mariachi Monarcas de Milwaukee is seeking dedicated and disciplined musicians who are passionate about music, culture, and performance. While prior mariachi experience is not required, candidates should demonstrate strong musicianship, professionalism, and a genuine interest in developing within the mariachi tradition.

General Requirements (All Instruments)

• Commitment to musical excellence and respect for Mexican cultural traditions.

• Reliable transportation and weekend availability for performances and rehearsals in Milwaukee.

• Professional attitude, punctuality, and ability to work collaboratively within an ensemble.

• Competence in reading and memorizing music accurately.

• Openness to feedback and a willingness to grow artistically.

• Vocal ability is encouraged; willingness to sing harmonies (coros) is highly valued.

Trumpet

• Solid tone, intonation, and dynamic control across registers.

• Prior experience performing in concert band, jazz band, or similar ensembles is beneficial.

• Ability to maintain consistent tuning and balance when playing in section.

• Understanding of phrasing, articulation, and endurance for live performance.

• Must own and maintain a professional-quality trumpet.

Guitar / Vihuela

• Strong sense of rhythm and steady strumming technique.

• Knowledge of chords and progressions; mariachi rasgueo patterns can be introduced during rehearsal.

• Consistent tempo and clean transitions between chord changes.

• Ability or willingness to sing harmonies is preferred.

• Must maintain instrument in good playing condition.

Violin

• Clear tone production, solid intonation, and proper bow control.

• Proficiency in reading music and memorizing performance material.

• Ability to play harmonies and ensemble parts with balance and precision.

• Familiarity with group performance settings such as orchestra or chamber ensemble is beneficial.

• Willingness to develop mariachi phrasing and stylistic techniques.

Harp (Arpa Jalisciense)

• Strong rhythmic awareness and coordination with accompaniment instruments.

• Understanding of melody, harmony, and chordal structure.

• Mariachi or folk harp experience is beneficial but not required.

• Must own or have regular access to a harp suitable for performance.

• A loaner arpa jarocha may be available for qualified candidates who do not currently own an instrument.

• Mariachi experience is not required; qualified musicians from any background are welcome to audition.

• Members are expected to maintain a professional appearance and represent the ensemble respectfully.

• Rehearsals are held in Milwaukee; scheduling accommodations may be available for committed members.

• Occasional travel for regional performances may be required.
